Deep Tissue
Deep Tissue is a massage technique that focuses on the deeper layers of muscle tissues. It is an understanding of the layers f the body and the ability to work with tissues in these layers to relax, lengthen and release holding patterns in the most efficient way possible. Deep Tissue involves slow strokes and deep pressure on the contracted areas, along or across the muscle fibers, aiming to break up adhesions (or knots).
Due to slower strokes and heavier pressure, it is usually focused on smaller areas, as opposed to the full body massage that you might be offered in Swedish and other modalities. Also, because it is deeper, it can often cause some soreness during and after the massage. However, you will typically feel fantastic in a day or two.
Why Deep Tissue?
When muscles are stressed, both physically and emotionally, they block oxygen and nutrients, leading to inflammation that builds up toxins in the muscle tissue. Deeper pressure helps to loosen muscle fibers, helps break up scar tissue, release toxins and get blood circulating properly. Because of the release of toxins that may occur, it is advised to drink plenty of water before and after a deep tissue session. Your body wil revivined and energized, often as if you had a strenous workout.
Benefits
- Breaks up adhesions: muscle fibers stuck together, "knots" you can feel, often created by chronic holding pattternes and/or a lack of blood, water and nutrition.
- Decrease in pain
- Increase in Energy and Range of Motion
- May assist in postural realignment
- Allows for emotional holdings to release. Often times a sore shoulder is more than just a tight shoulder; often the body holds on to emotional tensions and other stresses that manifest as "knots" or tightness. Releasing the muscle may also release these emotions.
