Shiatsu

Developed in Japan in the early 1900's, Shiatsu is based on the concepts and theories of Traditional Chinese Medicine.  Loosely translated as "strong fingers", practitioners use finger pressure along the Meridian pathways.  Meridian pathways are pathways in which energy (chi) runs in the body, interconnecting throughout.  Shiatsu is used to unblock Chi along the meridians.

Unlike Swedish massage, this particular modality isperformed fully clothed, without the use of oils and lotions.  Usually, work will be performed on a mat located on the floor.  In some instances, a massage table at length to the practitioner can be used.

Focusing on point work and meditative breathing, the practitioner can create a rhythmic flow with the client.  Staying mindful of the meridian pathways, a therapist works by slowly applying and releasing pressure, through point work, softening, stretching, joint rotation and percussion.  As the meridian pathways become unblocked, positive, relaxed energy begins to flow, creating a re-balancing in the body and a release of tension.
